How to add ASA Firewalls to Cisco Security Manager (CSM)

In this article we will take a look at how to add Cisco ASA firewalls to Cisco Security Manager (CSM).


There are 4 ways to add devices to CSM:
  1. Add a device from the network
  2. Add a device from a file
  3. Add a device from an export file
  4. Create a device (Add a device that isn't on the network yet)

The easiest way to add a device is to use the first option (Add device from the network). One negative of doing this is that if you have multiple devices to add, you won't be able to add them all at once.

If you want to add more than one devices, it is worth exploring the other options.

It is worth checking the discovery settings if it's the first time running CSM. You could also check Cisco documentation to verify the default settings. For the purpose of this demonstration, the default settings are shown in the screenshot below.


Access Cisco Security Configuration Manager and click File > New device and select 'Add Device From Network'.


Enter your device settings and specify what the device is that you would like to add. In our case we will be selecting ASA. You can also discover device settings if you check the boxes.


Once you're happy with the host settings, press 'Next'. You will now be required to enter the main user credentials. Enter the enable password if required.

Once you are happy with the credentials and ports that are configured, you can either press 'Next' or 'Finish' if you want to proceed with adding the device.

CSM will establish a connection to the ASA on port 443 with the credentials that you have provided.

Configuring Cisco Smart License Software

In this article, I would like to demonstrate how to configure Cisco Smart Licensing on the virtual Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASAv). This post assumes that readers already have access to there own Smart Account and would like to know the process of applying licenses. Step 1: Generate ID Token Sign into your Cisco Software Portal: software.cisco.com and navigate to “Smart Software Licensing” You will now need to create an ID token for your device, this is required for communication between the device and the licensing authority. As part of my on-going studying for the CCNA Security 210 – 260 certification I have been exploring different types of network attacks, one of which is CAM table overflow attacks. In this article I would like to share what I have learnt and provide a demonstration of the attack carried out in a lab environment. To understand my demonstration, you first need to understand how a CAM table overflow attack works and what happens as a result of the attack.   Switches build Content Addressable Memory (CAM) tables based on mac-addresses and port numbers. When a switch receives a frame it checks the table to see if the source mac-address is already known, if the source mac-address is unknown the switch will add the mac-address to the table along with the port number. The switch then checks the destination layer two frame and if no entry exists the switch broadcasts the frame out of all ports except the port in which the frame was received.
